  • Balancing Equity and Global Health Security: Towards a Fair and Effective Pandemic Agreement

    This commentary in the International Journal of Public Health, co-authored by members of the EGHRIN network, addresses the critical need for equity to be at the heart of the ongoing WHO pandemic agreement negotiations. It outlines key recommendations for ensuring fair access to vaccines and treatments, equitable benefit sharing through a robust Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing (PABS) mechanism, pragmatic implementation of One Health, and sustainable, long-term financing. With recent progress on the draft treaty, the article calls for binding commitments that prevent the inequalities witnessed during COVID-19 and ensure a resilient and inclusive global health system for the future.

  • The EU global health strategy: from policy to implementation

    This policy brief, co-authored by EGHRIN members in Global Health Research and Policy, critically examines the European Union's updated Global Health Strategy. While acknowledging the Strategy's alignment with Sustainable Development Goals and its emphasis on life-course wellbeing, health system strengthening, and equitable health threat responses, the authors identify key areas needing improvement.

This paper provides detailed suggestions on how strategic investments and considerations regarding partnerships and investment instruments will support research and innovations for poverty related and neglected infectious diseases.

    EGHRIN and its members find it essential to have a dedicated mechanism for funding Global Health research within Horizon Europe. Currently, EDCTP2 is the only dedicated mechanism for Global Health research of poverty-related infectious diseases within Horizon 2020.

    Investing in global health and innovation should be higher priority in Europe’s new research funding program, according to a newly published Lancet commentary.

  • Publication of EGHRIN authors in British Medical Journal: Where is the ‘global’ in the European Union’s Health Research and Innovation Agenda ?

    In this publication in BMJ, EGHRIN scientists publish an analysis that takes the evolvement of Horizon Europe from the initial framework of June 2018 to the framework agreed on in April 2019 into account. Their analysis shows that despite some improvements in terms of Global Health and reference to the Sustainable Development Goals, European industrial competitiveness continues to play a paramount role, with Global Health research needs and relevant health research for LMICs being only partially addressed. They argue that the globally interconnected nature of health and the transdisciplinary nature of health research need to be fully taken into account and acted on in the new European Research and Innovation Framework.

    EGHRIN has published it’s business plan. This “nonprofit-business” plan sets out a roadmap for EGHRIN that provides the translation from the moonshot to actual activities and plans.

    It also lays out our targets and goals and our plans for meeting those goals. This is a living document that will be updated on a yearly basis to reflect our evolving goals and circumstances.
